Objectives

At St. Mark Preschool learning is a natural process in the proper environment. We try to provide a stimulating, happy Christian atmosphere in which each child can learn and develop as freely and creatively as possible. We place special emphasis on making each child feel accepted and comfortable in the school situation. Enrollment is open to children two and one-half through five years of age.

Each child is given the opportunity to:

  • Explore and discover his/her enlarging world in a happy, unpressured atmosphere.
  • Learn to get along with others.
  • Develop physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.
  • Acquire skills and "learn to learn."
  • Create and communicate.
  • Experience joy and beauty.

Program

A typical day at St. Mark includes a generous amount of "center time," during which a child can explore, discover, touch, create, pretend, and relate to the other children. Outdoor play is an important part of our program. Activities in which each class participates as a whole include singing, rhythms, dancing, "talk-time," dramatizations, story time, counting games, and many other art projects. There is also a midmorning snack, which is provided by the school.

St. Mark Preschool plans activities which follow good principles of child growth and development. The teachers follow as a skeletal model The Creative Curriculum by Diane Dodge.

The basic areas covered during the year include:

  • Communication and Language Development - auditory discrimination, listening, speaking, dramatizations, stories, letters, beginning phonics.
  • Science - nature study, simple geography, space, simple chemistry.
  • Mathematics - numbers, counting shapes, reasoning, classification, patterning.
  • Social Studies - self-concept development, family, community, world.
  • Music - appreciation, rhythm, singing, dancing, rhythm band.
  • Art - color recognition, work with different materials, creative expression, appreciation, experimentation.
  • Physical Education - outdoor and indoor play, small and large muscle development, body and dental health and safety.

Child Protection Policy:

St. Mark Lutheran Church (ELCA) complies with our Child Protection Policy, effective 2012.

  • Training of all volunteers and staff
  • Background checks of all volunteers and staff
  • Written policy that is clear, concise, and available to all
  • Ongoing oversight
  • Commitment of Mission Council, parents and Pastor
  • Copies of the Child Protection Policy are available in the Narthex.

Staff:

All staff members are required to have a college degree and are professional teachers with experience.

Schedule

School begins in September (and January for the 2-1/2 yr. old January class) and ends no later than the first week of June. Preschool hours are 9 am to 12 noon daily. There is a summer program if the enrollment for that program is sufficient.

Insurance

School insurance is included in the registration fee and covers school activities.

Immunization

Your child's immunization record must be up to date in September as verified by you doctor.

ST. MARK PRESCHOOL, PRIOR TO ADMISSION OF ANY CHILD, REQUIRES EVIDENCE THAT THE CHILD HAS RECEIVED ALL REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS. ST. MARK PRESCHOOL DOES NOT ACCEPT NON-IMMUNIZED CHILDREN INTO THE PRESCHOOL.

Parent-Teacher Communications

Conferences with parents are held twice a year. An extra conference can be arranged at any time. Parents are also welcome to visit during school hours. We would also encourage any parent to share his or her talents, hobbies or interests with the school.

Classes

A unique feature is our small class size for 3 and 4 year old children. Preschool classes are limited to 10 children with 1 teacher, and the 2 1/2 year old classes have only six children per teacher.
